Wallpaper pattern search by image
Search by picture instead of words. Upload or photograph a pattern and browse the closest designs, with filters for colour, source and material and a plain explanation of why each result matches.
Identify a wallpaper I’ve seen · A wall, a sample or an offcut. Matches pattern and colour together.
JPEG, PNG, WebP or HEIC. Needs JavaScript; your photo is analysed in your browser.
How it works
- Photograph or upload the wallpaper, sample or picture you like.
- Crop to the pattern, or search the whole photo.
- Browse the closest designs, see why each matches, and follow the link to its source.
Tips for a good match
- Fill the frame with the pattern: no furniture, skirting boards or picture frames.
- Shoot straight on in even daylight. Avoid flash glare and deep shadow.
- Include at least one full repeat of the pattern if you can.
- Try both modes: “identify” weighs pattern and colour together, “looks like this” lets colour lead.
Questions
- How is similarity measured?
- Each design is described by its colour distribution, its fine texture and the directions of its edges. Your crop is described the same way and the closest designs are ranked by a weighted comparison of the three. Each result shows its colour, texture and structure scores.
- Is my photo uploaded anywhere?
- No. Your photo is decoded and cropped in your browser, and any location data embedded in it is discarded. Only a small numerical description of the crop (colour, texture and edge statistics, about 6 KB) is sent to compare against the catalogue; it cannot be turned back into a picture and is not stored.
- What is in the catalogue?
- Historic wallcoverings from Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum and The Metropolitan Museum of Art, both released under CC0, plus clearly labelled sample listings. Retailer catalogues with prices and links are being added.
- Does it work on my phone?
- Yes. Tap “Take a photo” to use the camera, or upload from your gallery. After the first visit the app opens offline and can search a smaller built-in catalogue; retailer listings and prices need a connection.
